Sonos built the Era 300 around spatial audio from the ground up rather than retrofitting it into a standard speaker form factor. Six drivers — two angled upward for height channels, two facing forward, one facing left, one facing right — recreate the overhead reflection cues that Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio mixes rely on. In a medium-sized room with Dolby Atmos music from Apple Music or Tidal, the difference versus a standard stereo speaker is immediately audible, not subtle.

Trueplay room calibration uses the built-in microphone array to measure the room’s acoustics and adjust EQ in real time. Line-in via USB-C accepts a vinyl source or any 3.5mm-equipped device. Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and the Sonos app give you a wide range of source options without requiring the Sonos streaming service specifically.

The Era 300 can be paired as a stereo pair with a second unit for a full left/right spatial experience, or used as rear surrounds with a Sonos Arc soundbar for a complete home theatre system. Compact for what it achieves acoustically at 10.24 inches tall, it fits on a bookshelf without dominating the room.

Bose SoundLink Max Portable Speaker /product/bose-soundlink-max/ /product/bose-soundlink-max/#comments Sat, 16 May 2026 09:56:24 +0000 /product/bose-soundlink-max/ Bose's largest-ever portable speaker with party-worthy volume and a Bose Immersive Audio mode that creates a convincing stereo soundstage from a single unit.

The SoundLink Max is Bose’s answer to the market’s request for a portable speaker with enough output to own a backyard. The passive radiators on each end extend low-frequency response lower than you’d expect from the cabinet size, and at maximum volume the speaker remains controlled without breaking up — a feat smaller portables fail at 70% volume. Bose Immersive Audio creates a stereo widening effect that makes the single-cabinet design feel like more than a point-source speaker.

IP67 rating means full immersion resistance up to 1 metre for 30 minutes, so pool-deck, beach, and boating use are covered without paranoia. The carrying strap mounts securely via stainless steel D-rings and doubles as a shoulder carry for commutes. USB-C charging keeps the cable count low; a USB-A port can top up a phone from the internal battery.

Twenty hours of battery life at moderate volumes and a handle-equipped carry system make this the outdoor speaker for a group trip. PartyMode pairs two SoundLink Max speakers for a true stereo pair. Voice control works via Alexa and Google Assistant without pressing a button, though the ambient sensitivity is less precise outdoors at distance than indoors.

Driver Config Transducer array + 2 passive radiators
Waterproofing IP67 (1m / 30 min)

PartyMode Stereo pairing with second SoundLink Max
Voice Control Built-in mic, Amazon Alexa + Google Assistant
Dimensions 11.1 × 4.9 × 4.6 in
Weight 6.6 lbs (3.0 kg)

Apple HomePod (2nd Generation) /product/apple-homepod-2nd-gen/ /product/apple-homepod-2nd-gen/#comments Sat, 16 May 2026 09:56:24 +0000 /product/apple-homepod-2nd-gen/ Room-filling, spatially aware audio from a compact speaker — the HomePod knows where it is in the room and adapts its sound accordingly.

The second-generation HomePod is Apple’s first room-filling smart speaker and still one of the few that takes acoustic room modelling seriously. On setup, Spatial Audio calibration listens to the room and adjusts EQ, stereo width, and high-frequency dispersion to optimise for where the speaker is placed — near a wall, in a corner, on an open shelf — delivering consistently strong results regardless of placement.

A 4-inch high-excursion woofer and five tweeter array produces output at a volume-per-size ratio that outperforms similarly sized competitors. At normal listening volumes the low end is full and impactful without the muddiness that budget speakers exhibit. Stereo pairing with a second HomePod creates a genuine stereo image that fills living rooms and kitchens.

Siri handles timer and smart home commands reliably, and intercom messaging to other HomePod and Apple devices in the home is one of the more under-appreciated household conveniences. Thread mesh networking makes it a home hub for Matter-compatible smart home devices without needing a separate hub. Sound Recognition alerts you to smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors even when you’re in another room.
